2013 Campaign Archive: Kurt Riegel for Alderman, Annapolis Ward 2
Final WARD 2 election results:
I am so pleased and grateful for the support, hard work, and counsel from so many old (and new) friends, family, and others in my campaign for City Council. You have been amazing, contributing your time, energy, ideas, dollars, and passions to make this campaign so much more than it would have been without you.
A candidate always worries, at the beginning, whether putting himself forward might only leave him standing forlornly alone. You have all responded with such enthusiasm and generosity that no one can doubt the broad commitment of some of the best people there are anywhere, to the ideas and hopes for Annapolis put forward in the campaign.
It has been a fascinating experience, one that Marieluise and I will always be grateful for. It has connected us to our town in ways, and to a depth, that would not otherwise have been possible. It has informed us well about the passions, problems, and accomplishments of amazing people and institutions. As long as people like you remain involved, Annapolis has little to worry about.
- This race generated the highest participation (turnout) among all Annapolis wards.
- A shift of 22 votes (1.4%) would have reversed the outcome
- My losing 744 votes, exceeded the winners' total votes in 5 of 7 other wards.
- I spoke with Fred Paone and congratulated him on his victory.
Endorsements: I am grateful for endorsements by both our hometown newspaper, The Capital Gazette, and by the Anne Arundel Sierra Club, and by Councilman Chris Trumbauer..
Op-Ed, revised and updated Oct 22, 2013. The Capital Gazette published my "Where I Stand." It's a digest of my approach to civic challenges in Annapolis, and how I would like to help take our fine town forward to become even better.
Annapolis is a great town with wonderful people. Our challenge is to honor the best of our traditions, while also laying a foundation to enhance the quality of the lives of all our citizens. I am running for Alderman in Ward 2, bringing the knowledge, experience, enthusiasm, and energy necessary to achieve the following goals for Annapolis:
Responsibility: Nurture the financial health of Annapolis, through operating efficiencies, broadened and equitable revenue sources, and sound management practices. Adequate priority must always be given to the public safety of our citizens.
Vitality: Annapolis succeeds best when our citizens love living here, and outsiders want to visit us. We must foster successful businesses, recreational amenities, attractive public spaces, a healthy environment, vitality in the arts, music and other cultural pursuits, and close cooperation between the city and its schools & colleges.
Mobility: Business and community vitality depend on a transportation system that serves all our citizens. The system needs disciplined attention to all its components: streets, parking, public transit, pedestrian/bicycle sidewalks and paths. Imagination and care will improve and balance a system to serve our diverse citizenry better.
I will be grateful for your thoughts on public issues that concern you. Will you help me to define our opportunities, to identify problems that stand in the way of achieving the very best for Annapolis? And won't you help my campaign between now and November 2013?
Please contact me and participate in meetings that I'll convene periodically, announced here on the Calendar & News page. The Support page has information on how to support the campaign and by providing input, hosting meet-and-greet gatherings, contributing to the campaign fund, and otherwise becoming involved personally.
Together, we will make Annapolis into all that it can be.
